Student Computer Recommendations

Drake university student computer recommendations:

Computer Hardware
We have found that business grade machines are more durable and hold up better. Most major pc manufacturers offer a business line of computers. All macintosh models are business grade. Business grade pc models include the Thinkpad line from IBM, the Latitude line from Dell, the Satellite, Terca, and Portege line from Toshiba, and the Folio and Probook from HP. We recommend laptops configured with 3 or 4 year warranties, a core i3 or better processor, and 4gb of ram.

Law school: recommends windows machines
College of Business: recommends macintosh or windows laptops, note: macintosh computers may require additonal software purchases.
School of Journalism: recommends macintosh machines
College of Arts and Sciences: recommends mac or windows machines
School of Education: recommends macintosh or windows machines
College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences: recommends macintosh or windows machines

Other things to consider bringing

Security lock:
It is recommended that students bring and use a security lock for their laptops.  Locks are available at most computers and electronics stores.

Power strip w/ surge protection: A power strip with surge protection is recommended to protect your computer.  Extension cords are not allowed in the residence halls.

The original system CD/DVD’s that came with your computer: The original system CD/DVD’s will aid greatly if the computer develops software problems.
